SPRINGFIELD, NJ - The construction activity you may have noticed on Morris Avenue before Mountain Avenue is part of a beautification project to move unsightly double utility poles. According to Township Administrator Ziad Shehady, two dozen double wood poles are in the process of being replaced.
Utility companies will often replace a pole that is jeopardy with a twin pole that is attached. It is sometimes meant to be temporary but often stays in place for years. The replacement of the poles will remove unsightly poles from the streetscape.
There was some speculation that the pole removal was the beginning of the process to move the electrical pole from in front of the Gomes property so that redevelopment project could begin. This pole replacement plan is unrelated to the Gomes project. The Department of Transportation is redesigning the electrical circuit for that project. This work is expected to be done within the year.
