ATLANTIC CITY, NJ -- TAPintoTV caught up with Crystal Pruitt, Councilwoman of Franklin Township, at the 2019 New Jersey League of Municipalities Conference. Pruitt is currently the youngest person on the Franklin Township Council, and we spoke with her about her background, goals, and advice for millennials who want to get more politically active.

Pruitt, who is also Chief of Staff for New Jersey Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, won her first election this past November after having been appointed to cover an empty seat on the council last term. “To be chosen by the voters and the residents of Franklin Township really means so much because everything that we should be doing is about service to our residents,” said Pruitt, “so they put trust in me and I have to live up to it.”

Pruitt has a background in mental health and criminal justice, and often focuses on public safety concerns, primarily “how we address the community as government entities and making sure that we have a positive relationship,” she said.

In addition, as a woman of color, Pruitt brings her perspective on issues of diversity and inclusion to the council. “My goal is always making sure that we’re not just leaning on the diversity that we have, that we’re making intentional decisions," she said, "and are making sure that we’re not ignoring any voices.”

What’s her advice for fellow millennials who want to get involved in politics? First, find out what’s happening on the local level. Go to your town council meetings, try to get on any boards or commissions, or join a partisan club you’re interested in. “If you have really big concerns, you need to be voting and making sure you’re an informed voter, so you can hold people like me accountable,” said Pruitt.

“Learn what’s happening and then don’t be afraid to speak up,” Pruitt added, “because you have a place and you’re the future.”
