WESTFIELD, NJ — A new social space on the second floor of the Westfield Area YMCA, 220 Clark St., was officially dedicated and named The Glasser Foundation Lounge last week.

Members of the Y board and staff joined together with Margie Ticknor, Marlene Glasser and Laura Glasser-Baker of The Glasser Foundation and Sal Sollecito of Martins Builders to officially dedicate the space, which is already being used by Y members and guests. With comfortable seating, access to WiFi and vending machines, the lounge is being used by parents and caretakers while their loved ones take a class, by active older adults before or after a program, by teens after school and others throughout the day and evening.

“My dad loved the Westfield Y.  He always told stories about how he would come to the Y when he was a kid,” said Ticknor, daughter of Gerald Glasser and president of The Glasser Foundation. “He needed a place to come after school. It is very fitting for this space to be named after my dad as he would have been using it himself.”

Development of the lounge is a component of the Capital Improvement Program at the Westfield Area Y Main Facility. The campaign began outside with installation of an ADA-compliant entry ramp that accesses both a new elevator to the third floor and an enhanced vestibule. The Y installed an ice melt system in all walkways, an enclosed emergency exit from the second floor, modernized several classrooms, renovated the Fitness Express Center, installed ADA-compliant restrooms on the second and third floors, upgraded the infrastructure and aesthetics of the second and third floors and is in the process of constructing an emergency egress from the Wallace Pool. The next phase involves renovating and moving the racquetball courts from the lower level to the first floor to create staging space for future first floor and lower level renovations.

“At Martins Builders we like to focus on building relationships as well as buildings,” said Sal Sollecito of Martins Builders, contractors for the project. “We are very proud of the work we have done at the Westfield YMCA. The great management and staff, along with the dedicated board have made working here for the last two years a great pleasure. On behalf of Adolfo Martins and Carlos Silva, it is an honor to allow us to be part of facilitating the good works done by this great organization.”

Politics IS Government in Union County

April 23, 2018

After Bruce Patrson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting freeholder I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered. A the the April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.

After ten years of following government in Union County I conclude ...
