WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Area YMCA’s 5K Run for Everyone has established itself as a race not to be missed in the fall running calendar, and it continues to support programs for young people with special needs at the Y. This year’s race will kick off on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 9:30 a.m.
The start and finish for the 5K Run for Everyone will be in front of the Main Y Facility at 220 Clark Street.
The popular free Kids Run prior to the race will return. Open to kids age 8 and under, it will be held at 9 a.m. from Roosevelt School to the Main Y. All participants will receive a ribbon. Registration is required.
“This event has a tangible local cause. It continues to grow programs for people with special needs at the Y,” said Greg Hatzisavvas, Westfield Area YMCA Senior Director Member Wellness and Engagement.
Aug. 30 is the early bird registration deadline to run, walk or roll. Aug. 23 is the deadline for sponsors to appear on the shirts and banners.
Initial proceeds of the run established the Dragonfly Program which offers physical, recreational and social programs for young adults with special needs for free or at minimal cost. Money raised enabled the Y to hire a certified therapeutic recreation specialist to oversee these programs and develop new ones. Last year’s proceeds continued to expand Dragonfly and support the Y’s summer inclusion camp program.
“The Dragonfly class participants are already training for the 5K. Everyone is very excited and looking forward to improving over last year,” said Westfield Area YMCA Special Needs Coordinator Jill Koerber.
Awards will be given to overall and age group winners. Participants will have a chance to win prizes and refreshments will be served.
