Scotch Plains Family Escapes Huge Blaze

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- A family of four safely escaped from a large blaze at their home on Winchester Drive early Friday morning. 

Scotch Plains Police Chief John Lestarchick said in an interview with TAPintoSPF that the fire, deemed accidental, began outside the garage and made its way up the back of the house to the attic.

"By the time we got to the scene, the fire had a 20-minute head start on us," said Chief Lestarchick, who reported that one Scotch Plains firefighter was take to a local hospital for a minor burn on his neck. He was treated and released.

Firefighters from Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Westfield, Mountainside, and Berkeley Heights responded to the blaze. 

Already work has begun to rebuild the back of the home.
