Taming of the Shrew and Total Renew Yoga at Westfield Memorial Library

The Westfield Memorial Library is pleased to host “Taming of the Shrew” on Wednesday, July 19, at 7 p.m., and Total Body Renew Yoga on three Thursdays at 7 p.m.: July 20, July 27 and August 3. The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.

The Shakespeare Theatre’s Next Stage Ensemble will present, “Taming of the Shrew,” a loveable Shakespeare comedy. It is the basis for many screen adaptations from Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate” to the more modern “10 Things I Hate About You.” The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew.

Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments—the “taming”—until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's more desirable sister, Bianca.

One of the divisions of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's Summer Professional Training Program, the Next Stage Ensemble was created to foster the work of early-career actors. Participants take advanced classes in voice and movement, while working on hour-long productions of classic plays.

These productions bring theatre to a variety of locations throughout the region including libraries, retirement communities, summer camps, and schools. Acting as “ambassadors” of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey during the summer months, the Next Stage Ensemble brings theatre to communities across New Jersey, with a special emphasis on audiences who cannot travel to the Theatre.

Registration to see Taming of the the Shrew is required. MURAL patrons may sign up beginning July 12, space permitting.

Total Body Renew Yoga will be presented by yoga teacher Lorraine Harwelik. According to Harwelik, the class is for anyone who feels stiff, sore or grumpy.

“Do your joints feel like they need a grease job?” she asked. “Did you know that you can upgrade your body's strength, flexibility, and agility? Total Body Renew Yoga can increase your efficiency and overall comfort level.”

This system of yoga movements is designed to help class members unlock their movement and comfort potential by safely warming and releasing muscle fibers and increasing the joints' range of motion.

Lorraine M. Harwelik is a registered yoga teacher, certified herbalist, and licensed New Jersey educator. She has presented many well attended programs at the library including, Yoga for Gardeners and the Health Benefits of Herbs.

Participants can take one, two or all three classes, but classes are small, so registration is strongly suggested.

The programs are open to Westfield Memorial Library and MURAL cardholders. (MURAL cardholders belong to the 43 libraries that are part of the Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries. Visit and click on the “About Us” tab to see if your library participates.) To register for the program, visit the library’s website at, click on the Online Calendar, or call 908.789.4090 option 0.

Founded in 1879, the Westfield Memorial Library — the community’s destination for discovery and ideas — engages minds, entertains spirits and facilitates lifelong learning for people of all ages. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and closed on Sunday for the summer.

For more information call 908-789-4090, visit the library’s website at, and sign up for the monthly e-newsletter “Library Loop,” or stop by the library at 550 East Broad Street for a copy of the award-winning quarterly newsletter “Take Note.”

Avon Loses Its Last ‘Grand’ Hotel to the Claw of an Excavator

March 17, 2018

AVON-BY-THE-SEA, NJ — In less than two days, an Avon-by-the-Sea landmark that stood for 130 years was reduced to a huge pile of rubble. The Norwood Inn no longer stands on the corner of Norwood and Second Avenues — the last of the stately hotels that once graced the streets of Avon.

As onlookers gathered around the demolition site on March 15 and March 16, an excavator clawed its ...

You Want a Check for How Much!

My first admissions gig was working for a small liberal arts college with a pretty hefty price tag.  Picture me at a college fair: name tag in place, pile of brochures ready to go.  An eager family would walk up and we’d start a conversation.  One of the first questions I’d get from parents was about cost and the moment that $50,000-plus figure left my mouth I ...

Proud to support Tom Malinowski for Congress

March 8, 2018

Every single day, whether I want to be or not, I am reminded how important it is that Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives in November and check Donald Trump. Fortunately, there is a terrific candidate in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District who can beat incumbent Leonard Lance. That candidate is Tom Malinowski.

I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including ...
