College women love to throw a good party, and what better reason to celebrate than a 100th anniversary?  Join the College Woman’s Club of Westfield for “The pARTy of the Century” on Saturday, April 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at South Avenue Arts, 221 South Avenue in Garwood.  A lively evening of fine food, drink, and music will provide the backdrop for an auction of original artwork and unique experiences to benefit the club’s scholarship program for young women in Westfield.

Guests will have the exceptional opportunity to bid on a selection of paintings, prints and photographs by several prominent local artists, including Patricia Brentano, Ricardo Roig and Fran Azzara. Tickets to concerts, sporting events, and TV talks shows will round out the silent auction prizes, including premium seating for Mets and Giants games;  tickets to “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” “Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” or “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” as well as a deep sea fishing excursion and a cocktail cruise on New York harbor.

Admission to the event is $75 per person, payable at the door.  Please RSVP to brucia@verizon.net.  All proceeds from the evening will benefit the club’s scholarship fund.  CWC awards over $50,000 in scholarships annually on the basis of financial need, academics and community service.

Founded in 1917, the College Woman’s Club is one of Westfield’s oldest charitable service organizations.  In addition to its fundraising efforts, CWC hosts an active calendar of social and networking events, including guest speakers, museum trips and interest groups.   Membership is open to all area women with a college degree and a desire to help future generations achieve that goal.   For more information on the event or membership information, please visit cwclubwestfield.org.

Moms Helping Moms Foundation Receives Overwhelming Support from Community to Help Mothers this Mother’s Day

June 20, 2018

Mother’s Day is often celebrated by showering the women in our lives with beautiful flowers, heartfelt cards, and taking them on special outings to show them how much they mean to us. Yet, for many low-income mothers living in our community, they struggle each day to provide the basics for their babies.

Diapers are a necessity yet one in three families in the United States lack an ...

Sleep out at Covenant House

June 18, 2018

I can enjoy the same movies over and over like it were the first time to see them.  My kids roll their eyes at this.  Well, many unimaginable things happen as you become a certain age, and you tend to learn to accept those things graciously as gift.   But I remember the movie “The Blind Side.”  Until I saw that movie, I didn’t know homeless children ...

What's Hot and What's Not

Summer is a great time to take a step back, sip a cool beverage, and take a look at what’s going on in the world of college admissions.  Departments use the summer to evaluate how their year went and plan on any changes they want to make for the fall.  Did they over-enroll? Under-enroll?  What application materials were useful to them?  Which were redundant or time ...

Get Empowered to Help Prevent Suicide

June 10, 2018

Dear Editor:

Over the past week social media and the news have been filled with stories and articles encouraging people to seek help if they’re in emotional distress. There have been countless articles about the need to break the silence around the topic of mental health and suicide, and I am encouraged by the support people are extending to others.

Often, the death by suicide by ...
