On Wednesday August 9, 2017 at 7:30 PM Trinity Episcopal Church,119 Forest Avenue, Cranford, New Jersey will have a Vespers service in the tradition of the ecumenical monastic community in Taize, France.
Vespers also known as Evening Prayer or Evensong is part of the Episcopal Daily Office to be celebrated in the late afternoon or evening. “The Taize form of worship utilizes short repetitive chants and periods of silence to nurture a quiet meditative space for us to encounter God,” said Reverend Andy Kruger, Trinity’s Priest-in-Charge. The church will be specially decorated for the service with Taize-inspired elements to create an environment of intimacy.
“Taize chants of short, repetitive phrases are quite simple to learn and pick up,” said Anthony Rafaniello, Trinity’s Music Director. “Repeating the short but meaningful chants allows us to experience them more deeply,” Mr Rafaniello continued. “We invite everyone to come and experience this very special form of worship,” Father Andy said.
The Taize Community is an ecumenical monastic order located in France. It has over 100 brothers of both Catholic and Protestant faiths from over 30 different countries. Taize was started in 1940 by Brother Roger Shutz, a reformed protestant, who authored ‘The Rules of Taize’ for how the community operates. Each year over 100,000 young people from around the world make pilgrimages to Taize to participate in weekly meetings of prayer, study, and sharing. Taize seeks to include people and traditions from across the globe. This is reflected in the prayers and music which are said in many languages. The music employs simple phrases from scripture or psalms chanted repeatedly to come to a deeper relationship with God.
