On Wednesday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. the Westfield Memorial Library is pleased to present the Hudson Shakespeare Company’s production of “Macbeth.” The library is located at 550 East Broad Street.

One of Shakespeare’s great classics, this eerie tale chronicles the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland.

Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then haunted by nightmares, visions, and screams in the night feeding his guilt and paranoia.

Forced to commit more bloody murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death as ghosts, enchantments and other horrors scar the land.

Founded in 1992, the Hudson Shakespeare Company continues to strive toward bringing the classics and contemporary theater to a myriad of locations and venues in New Jersey and the greater Tri-State area. Through their programs, they seek to create innovative and comfortable atmospheres for all personnel, from on stage to back stage, and to provide broad cultural and artistic exposure to audiences. At the same time, they pride themselves on a long tradition of giving first time directors, actors and technicians their “first crack at the theater.”

The program is free and open to Westfield Memorial Library and MURAL cardholders. (MURAL cardholders belong to the 43 libraries that are part of the Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries. Check our website to see if your library participates.) To register for the program, visit the library’s website at www.wmlnj.org, click on the Online Calendar, or call 908.789.4090 option 0.

Politics IS Government in Union County

April 23, 2018

After Bruce Patrson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting freeholder I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered. A the the April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.
