WESTFIELD, NJ — Love pizza? Head to the Westfield Area YMCA’s second annual Pizza Palooza Sunday, March 5, where you can try and vote on slices from some of Westfield and Garwood best-loved pizzerias, including Buona Pizza, Di Farina, Ferraro's, Gennaro's, Randazzo’s, Rudy's,  Mama’s and La Casa.

The event will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the gym at the Main Y Facility, 220 Clark Street. Participants will taste and vote from 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm. First, second and third place winners will be announced at 1:45 p.m.

A $10 contribution for adults and children ages 4+ benefits the Y’s Annual Support Campaign, which provides over $400,000 in direct financial assistance to individuals and families in need to enable their participation at the Y.  (Kids 3 and under get in for free.) Approximately 88 percent of scholarship awards enable children to attend child care and day camp programs while approximately 12 percent supports membership and program participation.

“It’s a fun family event for all ages,” said Sharon London, assistant aquatic director at the YMCA. “You can come with your workout friends, come with another family. It’s for a great cause. And who doesn’t love pizza?”

Participants will also enjoy Italian music and a chance to win four 30-minute private swim lessons with the instructor of their choice.

About 150 people came to Pizza Palooza last year, and more are expected March 5. London recommended registering in advance to guarantee your family can get in. Register online at www.westfieldynj.org or at the Main Y Facility Welcome Center, 220 Clark Street.

Sleep out at Covenant House

June 18, 2018

I can enjoy the same movies over and over like it were the first time to see them.  My kids roll their eyes at this.  Well, many unimaginable things happen as you become a certain age, and you tend to learn to accept those things graciously as gift.   But I remember the movie “The Blind Side.”  Until I saw that movie, I didn’t know homeless children ...

What's Hot and What's Not

Summer is a great time to take a step back, sip a cool beverage, and take a look at what’s going on in the world of college admissions.  Departments use the summer to evaluate how their year went and plan on any changes they want to make for the fall.  Did they over-enroll? Under-enroll?  What application materials were useful to them?  Which were redundant or time ...
