“This event has a tangible local cause,” Greg Hatzisavvas, Westfield Area YMCA senior director of member and wellness engagement, said. “It continues to support and grow special needs programs at the Westfield Area YMCA.”

The annual run supports the Y’s Dragonfly program, which offers physical, recreational and social classes for young adults with special/adaptive needs. “You will see the people in that Dragonfly program participating here on race day,” Hatzisavvas said.

While the 5K Run for Everyone has always been a USATF (USA Track & Field) sanctioned event and certified course, this year it has been selected to be a 2017 USATF-NJ New Balance Grand Prix 500-point event. USATF-NJ members should provide their membership number at registration.

The start and finish for the 5K Run for Everyone will be the same as last year, in front of the Main Y Facility at 220 Clark Street. All registrants by Aug. 20 are guaranteed a race shirt. Awards will be given to overall and age group winners. Participants will have a chance to win major prizes and refreshments will be served. A Family Fun event will follow the 5K and end at 12:30 p.m.

“The 5K Run for Everyone continues to grow and has become an annual favorite for our members and the community,” Hatzisavvas said. “Sponsors see the local community impact of their support. Runners and volunteers return based on their great past experiences and form teams with friends, co-workers, school clubs and families. We also expect new runners who are attracted to the event’s status as a USATF-NJ Grand Prix event.”

The Westfield Area YMCA is inviting businesses and individuals to sponsor the event. Sponsorships are tax-deductible and available at various levels. Volunteers are encouraged to register early as individuals or as groups.

Avon Loses Its Last ‘Grand’ Hotel to the Claw of an Excavator

March 17, 2018

AVON-BY-THE-SEA, NJ — In less than two days, an Avon-by-the-Sea landmark that stood for 130 years was reduced to a huge pile of rubble. The Norwood Inn no longer stands on the corner of Norwood and Second Avenues — the last of the stately hotels that once graced the streets of Avon.

As onlookers gathered around the demolition site on March 15 and March 16, an excavator clawed its ...

You Want a Check for How Much!

My first admissions gig was working for a small liberal arts college with a pretty hefty price tag.  Picture me at a college fair: name tag in place, pile of brochures ready to go.  An eager family would walk up and we’d start a conversation.  One of the first questions I’d get from parents was about cost and the moment that $50,000-plus figure left my mouth I ...

Proud to support Tom Malinowski for Congress

March 8, 2018

Every single day, whether I want to be or not, I am reminded how important it is that Democrats gain control of the House of Representatives in November and check Donald Trump. Fortunately, there is a terrific candidate in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District who can beat incumbent Leonard Lance. That candidate is Tom Malinowski.

I'm a lifelong New Jersey resident -- including ...
