WESTFIELD, NJ — Registration is open for the Westfield Area YMCA’s 5K Run for everyone Sunday, Sept. 10, beginning at 10 a.m. Sign up to run, walk or roll, or to sponsor or volunteer at www.westfieldynj.org/get-involved/5k-run-for-everyone.

“This event has a tangible local cause,” Greg Hatzisavvas, Westfield Area YMCA senior director of member and wellness engagement, said. “It continues to support and grow special needs programs at the Westfield Area YMCA.”

The annual run supports the Y’s Dragonfly program, which offers physical, recreational and social classes for young adults with special/adaptive needs. Classes include Let’s Move and Dance, crafts, strength and conditioning, boxing, yoga and movement and social games. Personal training is also available. This fall, the Y is introducing Let’s Move and Dance classes just for teens ages 14-17.

“You will see the people in that Dragonfly program participating here on race day,” Hatzisavvas said.

While the 5K Run for Everyone has always been a USATF (USA Track & Field) sanctioned event and certified course, this year it has been selected to be a 2017 USATF-NJ New Balance Grand Prix 500-point event. USATF-NJ members should provide their membership number at registration.

The start and finish for the 5K Run for Everyone will be the same as last year, in front of the Main Y Facility at 220 Clark Street. All registrants by Aug. 20 are guaranteed a race shirt. Awards will be given to overall and age group winners. Participants will have a chance to win major prizes and refreshments will be served. A Family Fun event will follow the 5K and end at 12:30 p.m.

“The 5K Run for Everyone continues to grow and has become an annual favorite for our members and the community,” Hatzisavvas said. “Sponsors see the local community impact of their support. Runners and volunteers return based on their great past experiences and form teams with friends, co-workers, school clubs and families. We also expect new runners who are attracted to the event’s status as a USATF-NJ Grand Prix event.”

The Westfield Area YMCA is inviting businesses and individuals to sponsor the event. Sponsorships are tax-deductible and available at various levels. Volunteers are encouraged to register early as individuals or as groups.

For details and registration, visit www.westfieldynj.org/get-involved/5k-run-for-everyone, the Westfield Area YMCA Welcome Center at 220 Clark Street, Westfield, or call 908-301-9622.

The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Visit www.westfieldynj.org to learn more about Westfield Area YMCA programs. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

I can enjoy the same movies over and over like it were the first time to see them.  My kids roll their eyes at this.  Well, many unimaginable things happen as you become a certain age, and you tend to learn to accept those things graciously as gift.   But I remember the movie “The Blind Side.”  Until I saw that movie, I didn’t know homeless children ...

Often, the death by suicide by ...
