WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield Community Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Connors, held its annual free Independence Day Concert in Mindowaskin Park Thursday night.
The band was joined by members of the Westfield Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution, who presented a special program in tribute to Independence Day. Allan Betau of the Westfield American Legion Martin Wallberg Post #3 spoke about the legion’s origins and continued mission to remember and assist those who served in the Armed Forces. The “towne crier” gave the “news of the day” from colonial times.
The band’s music program featured selections to celebrate America, including “The Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along," an audience sing-along of popular traditional and contemporary patriotic songs.
The band will conclude its Summer Concert Series on July 12 at 7:30 p.m. with a concert program celebrating the 100thbirthday of Leonard Bernstein and featuring flute soloist Helen Bartolick.
The band’s Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Westfield Recreation Department, Don Bogardus, Director. Chairs and blankets are recommended. In the event of rain, concerts take place in the Westfield Community Room, located in the Westfield Municipal Building.
