WESTFIELD, NJ — Girl Scout Troop 40041 in Westfield is collecting used solar eclipse glasses to be redistributed to schools in Asia and South America by the group Astronomers Without Borders in time for the 2019 solar eclipse there.

“The eclipse was such an exciting event that really brought everyone across the country together,” Grace Hutchinson, a member of the troop and a rising sophomore at Westfield High School, said. “When we saw that we could use our old glasses to help less fortunate people have the same experience, we thought it would be a lot easier to gather multiple glasses for one big mailing rather than making everyone do it own their own.”

Drop off locations in town are at Bohemian Raspberry (219 South Ave. East), Vicki's Diner (110 East Broad St.) and the Memorial Pool check-in gate (713 Cumberland St.). Boxes will be out for collection until Sept. 1.

Moms Helping Moms Foundation Receives Overwhelming Support from Community to Help Mothers this Mother’s Day

June 20, 2018

Mother’s Day is often celebrated by showering the women in our lives with beautiful flowers, heartfelt cards, and taking them on special outings to show them how much they mean to us. Yet, for many low-income mothers living in our community, they struggle each day to provide the basics for their babies.

Diapers are a necessity yet one in three families in the United States lack an ...

Sleep out at Covenant House

June 18, 2018

I can enjoy the same movies over and over like it were the first time to see them.  My kids roll their eyes at this.  Well, many unimaginable things happen as you become a certain age, and you tend to learn to accept those things graciously as gift.   But I remember the movie “The Blind Side.”  Until I saw that movie, I didn’t know homeless children ...

What's Hot and What's Not

Summer is a great time to take a step back, sip a cool beverage, and take a look at what’s going on in the world of college admissions.  Departments use the summer to evaluate how their year went and plan on any changes they want to make for the fall.  Did they over-enroll? Under-enroll?  What application materials were useful to them?  Which were redundant or time ...

Get Empowered to Help Prevent Suicide

June 10, 2018

Dear Editor:

Over the past week social media and the news have been filled with stories and articles encouraging people to seek help if they’re in emotional distress. There have been countless articles about the need to break the silence around the topic of mental health and suicide, and I am encouraged by the support people are extending to others.

Often, the death by suicide by ...
