BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Darren DeMarco, owner of White Tiger Dojo in Berkeley Heights, recently hosted a "Stop the Bleed" class at his studio and donated $400 of proceeds to the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad.

With the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre, DeMarco saw the need to educate people in how a bystander can respond to stop the bleed and possibly save a life. "When Tyler [Smith, "Stop the Bleed" instructor] and I spoke after the Vegas shooting, we knew that there were only two ways we could honor the people of Las Vegas: one, learn to be the best first responder we can be; and two, donate to the underfunded and undermanned first responders like our own BHVRS," said DeMarco.

"Stop the Bleed" is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives," according to the Stop the Bleed website.

"Stop the Bleed" was launched in 2015 by the White House as an interagency effort mainly involving the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the Department of Homeland Security. ACS identified and structured a bleeding control outreach and training program to be taught to lay-responders using evidence-based techniques learned and proven by troops in combat over the last two decades.

While 12 million bystanders are trained in CPR each year, they are not receiving training in life-threatening trauma care. The overarching goal of the "Stop the Bleed" program is to train bystanders to treat patients suffering from massive bleeds, whether it be from an active shooter event or other type of trauma such as a car accident, said Smith.

The participants received four hours of training in the use of "wound packing", hemostatic gauze, and tourniquets among other techniques and implements.

"I think the biggest thing is having knowledge," said DeMarco. "So if you are stuck -- god forbid, if it's family -- you are not running -- you have to do something."

DeMarco will host a "Stop the Bleed" class on November 11, 2017 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. at his White Tiger Dojo studio located at 99 Industrial Road in Berkeley Heights. 908.665.8983.
