History Comes Alive at Westfield Memorial Library

In celebration of Black History Month, the library will show the critically-acclaimed film, “Harriet” starring Cynthia Erivo and Leslie Odom, Jr. on Tuesday, February 25 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Harriet is the story of Harriet Tubman, her life and the impossible obstacles she overcame.

A critic for Roger Ebert stated, “Erivo captures Tubman's shining spirit and courage with compassion, beautifully reflecting her bravery on a toughened face she wears with pride,” while The New York Times called the film “a rousing and powerful drama, respectful of both the historical record and the cravings of modern audiences.”

Based on the inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, Harriet tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America's greatest heroes.

Haunted by memories of those she left behind, Harriet (Cynthia Erivo) ventures back into dangerous territory on a mission to lead others to freedom. With allies like abolitionist William Still (Leslie Odom, Jr.) and the entrepreneurial Marie Buchanon (Janelle Mon`ae), Harriet risks capture and death to guide hundreds to safety as one of the most prominent conductors of the Underground Railroad.
