BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Governor Livingston fall play was announced on Monday, September 17, and, in case you missed it, it’s Little Women!

Little Women, a novel written by Louisa May Alcott, tells the story of four sisters and their mother living a Christian life during the 19th century. The main subject of the play is family, as the characters embark on a series of adventures throughout their lives, experiencing the good, the bad, and the evil together.

Joe Elefante, GL music teacher and the play’s director, explained how he chose Little Women, stating,“I feel like it utilizes our particular talent at GL really well, plus it’s very different from everything I’ve done since I started here.” He continued to say, “We’ve done four comedies in my first four years directing the play… it will be nice to do a change of pace.” In past years, GL fall plays have been feel-good, have-a-laugh type shows like Suite Surrender, The Odd Couple, Harvey, and many more. Little Women will definitely be different but it’s a change that the 2018 Hilltop Players are happily embracing.

Junior Mitchell Szalus said, “I definitely thought it [Little Women] was a little different than some of the more modern shows that the school has been doing recently. However, I am still always excited for an opportunity to be in the show and be around all of my friends.”

GL senior Sommer Campbell explained how the Hilltop Players always try to predict the show each year before it’s announced. They always think of Little Women as an option because of its girl-heavy cast. “The reason we gravitate towards saying it [Little Women] so often is because it’s about that experience of sisterhood, and that’s how we really feel in the theater department.”

Mrs. Talarico, a beloved English teacher at GL and producer of the Fall play and the Spring musical, explained how the shows are chosen. “Every single year and every single show, we think about who we have. Not in a pre-casty kind of way, but are we heavy on… something?” An example of the “something” that Mrs. Talarico discussed is the fact that a lot more girls than boys are interested in taking part in the show, so it would only make sense to choose a show inclusive of that.

It is evident that choosing the show is an important process that requires diligence. Little Women will be yet another show that the GL Hilltop Players take on with enthusiasm. The cast list was posted on Monday, October 1st:
