MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ - The Borough of Mountainside may be small in size compared to surrounding communities, but is unmatched when it comes to putting on a really big show every Fourth of July.

Festivities begin long before dusk arrives, starting at the community pool, where many  Mountainsiders and their guests enjoy competing for the biggest splash, funniest dives, or team up for the water balloon toss. The ever popular sidewalk chalk competition always “draws” a big crowd of contenders, as does the hula hoop contest. In addition to the activities at the pool, the Mountainside PAL sponsors pre-fireworks activities in conjunction with the Borough and the Mountainside Fire Department at Our Lady of Lourdes Church with DJ and free ice cream.

No Fourth of July would be complete without a barbeque or picnic with all the trimmings; however, recognizing there are also many who are struggling to put food on their tables, this year, the Borough of Mountainside is partnering with the FoodStock organization by holding a food drive.  Attendees of the fireworks were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items with them before enjoying the grand display of fireworks, held on the grounds of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the Deerfield School grounds.

The food drive will benefit the Community Food Bank of NJ in Hillside and will continue to be collected at Borough Hall in the lobby through July 13.
