MOUNTAINSIDE, NJ - Republicans Rene Dierkes and newcomer Donna Pacifico are the projected winners in the race for Mountainside Borough Council, according to the borough’s unofficial election results, edging out Democrat Carlos Gomez. In the unofficial results, Dierkes leads with 1,022 votes, while Pacifico earned 977 and Carlos Gomez received 855.

Other Races

Mayor Paul Mirabelli was elected into another four year term with 1,102 votes defeating write-in candidate Charles Brown who received 371 votes.

In the borough’s uncontested Board of Education race, James Ruban earned 1,013 votes while Carmine Venes earned 943 votes. Ruban and Venes ran unopposed to fill two seats.  TAPinto will confirm the third open seat that was decided by write-in vote.

A majority of Mountainside voters voted yes on Public Question 1, which asked whether the constitution should be amended to give certain veterans’ benefits to residents of continuing care retirement communities. A total of 911 voters voted yes, while 326 voted no.

A total of 2,558 borough residents cast votes, out of the borough’s 5,519 registered voters, resulting in 46.3% voter turnout in Mountainside.

General Assembly (2 seats):

  • Lisa Mandelblatt (Dem) - 599 votes
  • Stacey Gunderman (Dem) - 594 votes
  • Jon Bramnick (Rep) - 1,143 votes
  • Nancy Munoz (Rep) - 1,116 votes

Union County Surrogate (1 seat):

  • James S La Corte (Dem) - 647 votes
  • Peter B Lijoi (Rep) - 1,034 votes

Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders (3 seats):

  • Bette Jane Kowalski (Dem) - 629 votes
  • Sergio Granados (Dem) - 590 votes
  • Rebecca L Williams (Dem) - 636 votes
  • Peter G Kane (Rep) - 1,098 votes
  • Glenn E Gelband (Rep) - 1,098 votes
