BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Every year, Governor Livingston students in Ceramics, Crafts, and Project Connect participate in The Empty Bowls Project. This year, the students constructed Mishima bowls (a type of Japanese pottery), and then the Ceramics class sold their handmade bowls at all three showings at the GL fall play Little Women to raise money for the Community Food Bank of New Jersey in Hillside. Students were able to display their knowledge of constructing a bowl while contributing to a good cause.
The Community Food Bank exists to end hunger and food insecurities throughout New Jersey. What makes this organization so exceptional is that they supply food that is healthy and nutritious. Just this year, students were able to raise $140 for this wonderful organization, adding to the impressive $1,500 made in previous years.
Art teacher Kathleen McCullough has been leading student participation in the Empty Bowls Project for six years. McCullough said, “All the students put in a great effort to make the bowls both beautiful and functional. In fact, I think the bowls this year were the best I’ve ever seen.” The students shared that they were all very engaged in the bowl-making. Sophomore Katherine DeMicco said, “I loved learning how to make a bowl because it was new to me.” Sophomore Deanna DeFronzo also added that “it felt good to give back to the community.”
The Empty Bowls Project has become a GL tradition that both students and teachers have come to enjoy. Students are able to make the most of their education by using their new art skills to produce professional, functional bowls. At the same time, parents, teachers, students, and other play-goers were able to finish their holiday shopping with the perfect gift of a Mishima bowl. However, the most important part of this event is how it contributes to a good cause. The holiday season was a time for giving back and the Empty Bowls Project at Governor Livingston did just that.
