BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - On April 19th, beginning at 8am, Mike D. Skara, Technology Coordinator for the Berkeley Heights Public School District, will livestream a 50K run (31 miles) from his backyard to raise money for local charities. The ‘Backyard Run’ will consist of 781 laps and he is anticipating it will take about 6 hours to complete.
As the Technology Coordinator for the Berkeley Heights Public School District, Mike Skara oversees all technology operations for our schools. He heads up the group of technology gurus who our students and staff rely on for everything from cracked screens to technology upgrades to the latest interactive online experiences to enhance student learning. In his free time, Mike is a long-distance runner. When we say long distance, we mean LONG distance. Mike has completed three 100-mile races, five 24-hour runs, and 45 marathons. His most satisfying 100-mile race was completed in October 2019 following a devastating motorcycle accident on the first day of school 2017 that he feared might end his running career. With hard work and dedication, and support from the Berkeley Heights community, he made it back and he hasn’t stopped since.
When our schools began planning for remote learning, Mike was at the table giving guidance about technology, and in the back of his mind he was thinking about how he could give back to the community that he had been part of for the past fourteen years and had given him so much. When he heard about the efforts of FLAG (Front Line Appreciation Group) of Berkeley Heights during the April 2 Board of Education meeting, who are providing meals to frontline workers by purchasing food from local restaurants, a plan was hatched. He would promote and encourage BH students, and others, to continue pursuing a healthy and active lifestyle while quarantined at home, while raising money for FLAG. While he was at it, he also decided to give supporters the option to donate to GL’s SMAC (Student Movement Against Cancer) annual Relay for Life initiative.
Throughout his 50k backyard run Mike will intersperse clips from various district coaches who will demonstrate drills, staff showing how they are staying active at home, teaching staff members, and students who are joining in on the fun. There will also be some special guest appearances to keep the run exciting for those who tune in.
