According to an updated press release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Maplewood Police Chief Jim DuVaul announced that authorities have charged a suspect in connection with the double homicide in Maplewood, NJ on Saturday August 3, 2019.
Maplewood police officers were responding to a 911 call shortly after 6:00 am that a woman was being assaulted in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Walton Road. They found the an injured woman lying in the street. She has been identified as Karen L. Bermudez-Rodriguez, 26, of Maplewood and was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 7:17 am.
During the police officers canvassing the area of this incident they discovered an unresponsive male inside the residence in the 400 block of Walton Road. This male has been identified as David Kimowitz, age 40 of Maplewood and was pronounced dead at the scene stated Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutors Homicide Unit. Ms. Bermudez-Rodriguez worked for the Kimowitz family as an au pair.
A joint investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force and the Maplewood Police Department resulted in authorities charging Joseph D. Porter, age 27, of Elizabeth, NJ with the two deaths. Porter had been in a dating relationship with Bermudez-Rodriguez. Additional assistance in the investigation was also provided by the Essex County Police Department and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations Bureau (ICE/HSI).
According to Fennelly, Porter has been charged with two counts of murder, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and criminal restraint. He has been arrested and is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility pending an appearance in Superior Court.
