BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Gov. Livingston Boys Fencing Team faced the Montclair High School Fencing Team for the second time this season on Monday, March 1, 2021. The GL Boys lost in their first meet against Montclair, so the team was more determined than ever to win.

The meet opened with senior sabre Jayson Cantor against Montclair’s George Buccino and lost 1-5. Then GL’s Niloy Choudhuri won his sabre bout with a score of 5-4 and Christopher Ivanov lost 2-5. The meet score was 1-2 in favor of Montclair at this time.

The foil bouts began with senior fencers Richard Wetterer and Elijah Bove losing to Montclair’s Alexander Brown and Daniel Moroze. Alex Yu then faced Caleb Blim where he won 5-1, which made the meet score 2-4. Then came the epee bouts where the GL fencers Blake Januzzi, Brandon Lim, and Nate Laposky won all three bouts. Both Januzzi and Lim won with a score of 5-0. These three wins gave GL a one point lead with a meet score of 5-4.

When asked about his thoughts going into round two GL coach Michael Wang said, “I have faith in our team. If we continue to sweep the epees and the sabres get one or two more victories, we definitely have a chance. The foils have my utmost confidence to win a few bouts, which may be what we need to ultimately win the meet.”

In the second round the GL sabres lost all of their bouts making the meet score 5-7 and then it was up to the foils to secure a few wins in order to maintain a lead in the meet. Elijah Bove lost in the first foil bout of the second round 2-5. Then, Alex Yu faced Daniel Moroze where the score was 4-4 once the three-minute timer ran out meaning it went into overtime. Montclair’s fencer got priority, meaning if a one-minute timer ran out, they would obtain the point. Under extreme pressure and odds against him, Yu still won the point. Coach Wang said, "These few wins could mean the meet." Richard Wetterer also won his bout with a score of 5-1.

GL subbed in Fritz Huggins for Laposky and the GL epees, once again, won all three bouts. The meet score was 10-8, and in GL’s favor, going into round 3. GL experienced two losses for both sabre bouts and foil bouts in the third round but foil fencer Elijah Bove won 5-0 which tied the meet 12-12. Once again, the GL epees won all three bouts which gave GL the victory against Montclair with a score of 15-12.
