LIVINGSTON, NJ -  Governor Livingston’s Boys Soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Livingston Lancers in Livingston. Ethan Proper scored the only goal for the Highlanders late in the first half, but Livingston’s late game heroics were too much for the Highlanders to pull off the upset.

Livingston, an Essex County powerhouse team, was heavily favored in the matchup, but the visiting Highlanders kept the game close throughout. In the first half, Livingston took an early 1-0 lead, but junior captain Ethan Proper picked up where he left off last season, knocking in his first goal of the year to knot the match at one apiece.

GL kept the score even into the half, and the second half began as a defensive battle. In the game, there were a total of 19 shots on goal, as neither offense was able to create many scoring opportunities. In the 80th minute, Livingston snuck one past senior goalie Connor Bigelow, taking a 2-1 lead that would hold until the final whistle. Bigelow said, “We played well, but a couple bounces didn’t go our way.”

Senior Jeremey Malave has been a bright spot for the team, leading them vocally and by example on the pitch. The captain has dominated the back line providing energy and experience for the underclassmen behind him. Governor Livingston will take on Oratory Prep Wednesday at home while Livingston will travel to Newark Academy.
