The Highlander Cross Country Team competed in its 2019 season opener at the Cherokee Challenge in Marlton, NJ on September 7.  This invitational meet was opened to all team members, with six girls and 28 boys participating. For this meet, high school runners were grouped according to gender and class year, and each ran a distance of 3,200 meters, with several hundred participants from New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania in each race.  

For each race, the top 30 finishers were awarded medals.    Senior Victoria Vanriele placed fourth in a time of 11:59.88.  Freshman Joseph Frank placed 11th in a time of 11:18.52 and freshman Aiden Linde placed 17th in a time of 11:27.11.   

Meanwhile, senior Brandon Woods ran the overall fastest Highlander time of 10:55.63 that placed 66th among senior boys.  Matthew Saia was the top junior finisher, placing 105th in a time of 11:37.50, and Christopher Marinko was the top sophomore finisher, placing 49th in a time of 11:23.53. For the Highlander girls, the top sophomore finisher was Cady Wang who placed 43rd with a time of 13:35.89 and the top freshman finisher was Jaqua Connelly who placed 68th with a time of 14:53.87.

Up next, the team competes on Saturday, September 21 at the Thompson Park Class Meet in Jamesburg, NJ.
