BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -- The Gov. Livingston wrestling team will open its 2019-2020 season on Saturday in the Icebreaker Tournament in Old Bridge.

After a 12-11 season last year, head coach Rick Ortega is guiding a young Highlander team looking for leadership from its seniors this season.

"We are going into this season with no expectations but plenty of goals," Ortega said. "We are looking to get better every time we step on the mat and get ready for March. "We are young and rebuilding and this should be a great year for some of the younger guys to step up and contribute."

The seniors that GL will look to as anchors in this year's lineup include Jeff Stepien, who wrestled at 120 pounds last season, had an 18-12 record and finished fourth in District 16; Harrison Kelly, 145 pounds, who was 21-15 and finished third in District 16; Conner Vill, 152 pounds, who was 26-15 last year with a second-place finish in District 16; and Joe Scalora, 160 pounds, who had a 27-10 record highlighted by a third-place finish in District 16.

"This team will look to seniors in the middle of the line up to lead us," Ortega said. "We're looking for Harrison Kelly to have a breakout year with the offseason he has put in. Conner Vill was close last year to getting down to the states, and we are looking for him to get there this year.

"Sophomore Kyle Savino has had a great pre-season and I can't wait to see how he develops throughout the season," Ortega said. "Senior Joe Scalora continues to improve and is looking to improve on his region appearance last year."

Gov. Livingston will take part in the Mountain Lakes Holiday Tournament Dec. 27. The Highlanders' first regular-season dual match will be Jan. 3 at home against Summit.
