BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Governor Livingston Lady Highlanders defeated the Arthur L. Johnson Lady Crusaders by a score 39-34, on Tuesday, January 21, at home. Skylar Dowling had 18 points to lead all scorers in the win.
Gov. Livingston came into this game as a heavy favorite, however, ALJ had no plans to hand this one to the Highlanders. Sophomore forward Dominka Kosiek had another double-double, racking up 12 points and 12 rebounds in her fourth of the season.
Senior wing Shannon Polimeni was able to get to the foul line early and often, keeping the Lady Highlanders close as Johnson made numerous second chance points. The trend continued through the first half in the low scoring affair as GL took a 17-15 lead into halftime.
Governor Livingston came out with rejuvenated energy in the 3rd quarter, executing their 2-2-1 press to perfection. Johnson guards turned the ball over, resulting in multiple layups for Dowling and sophomore guard Gianna Ciccimarra.
The Lady Highlanders scored the first two baskets of the 4th quarter and became passive with 5 minutes to go, moving the ball around the perimeter allowing time to tick off the clock. This decision forced Johnson to trap, causing multiple turnovers, bringing the lead to 1.
A blown call with 1:30 to go wiped two points off the board for GL, giving Johnson a chance to tie or take the lead, but a big block by Sophomore center Reagan Hopeck allowed Dowling to take the ball and hit consecutive free throws on two different trips to finally put the outmatched Johnson team away.
Governor Livingston will be back in action Thursday at 4:00 against Plainfield (5-6) in Berkeley Heights. The Lady Highlanders have to be ready to play against the Lady Cardinals as seeding implications are beginning to take shape.
