SPRINGFIELD, NJ - The Gov. Livingston girls basketball team defeated the Jonathan Dayton Lady Bulldogs in overtime 42-38 on the road Thursday afternoon. Senior guard Skylar Dowling scored 14 points to lead all scorers in the UCC-Valley Division matchup.

Both teams started at a fast pace, but it was the Lady Highlanders who held a 9-7 advantage at the end of one quarter. The game stayed close in the second quarter with GL outscoring the Bulldogs by two leading by four at the half. Gov. Livingston had a matchup problem inside with junior Aiyana Wood of Dayton notching her second consecutive double double, recording 11 points and 12 rebounds, with the other coming in a 43-40 defeat to Kent Place on Tuesday.

The Lady Highlanders came out of the half strong with a couple of easy baskets that were quickly returned by Wood and freshman Samantha Casey, who had six points, seven rebounds, and two assists. At the end of three, the Highlanders led 32-27.

Although the Bulldogs closed the fourth quarter on a 9-4 run to force overtime, sophomore forward Reagan Hopeck began to finally show maturity in the paint, contributing 10 much needed points in the low scoring affair. Hopeck has recently been inserted into the starting lineup after playing great defense in reserve minutes earlier in the season. Fellow sophomore Julia Byrnes cashed in three times at the charity stripe, something the team has struggled with up to this point.

During overtime, senior leadership came into play, and luckily, the Lady Highlanders have been there before, with Dowling taking over on offense and out scoring the Lady Bulldogs 6-2 in the frame to hang onto the victory. Sophomores Allie Post and Gianna Ciccimara also contributed with on ball pressure that disrupted the Dayton guards heavily throughout the game.

The Lady Highlanders will be back in action at 3:30 Sunday against JP Stevens High School (4-6) as part of the Believe in a Cure Event at Fairleigh Dickinson- Madison. Governor Livingston will look to go on a run as they are smack dab in the middle of the season.
