The new decade is here and students and teachers are eager to see what it will bring. From annual events to a fresh start at personal ambitions, there is a lot to look forward to in 2020.

Resolutions are a New Year's tradition. Kicking off the New Year, many students have created resolutions to achieve their goals. For students, some of their resolutions revolve around academics and extracurricular activities. Freshman Arden McDonald said, “This New Year I’m looking forward to really improving on my grades and focusing on sports.” More specifically, she continued, “I’d like to accomplish making the honor roll.” It is encouraging to know that students are challenging themselves and aspiring to improve.

Like many other sophomores, Holliday Woodard is eager to get her driving permit next year. However, she also has a unique reason for being excited for 2020. She says she’s looking forward to “writing 2020 instead of 2019.”

Freshman Daniel Whelan is looking even further into the new decade, specifically looking forward to becoming an upperclassman. He said, “I do want to do NHS, Link Crew, and definitely participate in those.” In addition, even though he cannot vote, yet, he is still eager for the 2020 presidential election to see how it plays out, as well as the result of the impeachment trials.

As most seniors are, Anam Rahim is enthusiastic to start college in the new year. “I’m excited for a new start, to be independent. I like meeting new people, so I’m really excited for that too.”

Although Rahim is looking all the way ahead to the next school year, senior Ava Reiner focused more on the end of this one. She said, “I’m excited for all the graduation stuff, like the senior picnic.” She added, “To see everyone go [after graduation]. That will be so sad.” For the seniors, their graduation in 2020 will bring a close to an important chapter in their lives, but also the start of another.

GL’s teachers also have many reasons to be excited for the new year. For example, music teacher Josef Ellis happily shared, “I’m getting married in November 2020, so that’s probably what I’m looking forward to most.” On a more general note, he added that he expects next year to be another good school year.

Everyone is enthusiastic about the arrival of the new year. With so many exciting things and events to look forward to, 2020 is beginning to look like a fantastic start to the new decade.
