MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ - Thompson Park will host the Race for Veterans 5K and one-mile run on Sunday, September 9 at 9:30 a.m. The race will be run in honor of SPC. Michael L. Gonzalez and is sponsored by the Butterfly Circle of Friends.

The Butterfly Circle of Friends works to assist those in need, especially veterans, service members and their families. The non-profit organization is comprised predominantly of family and friends of Gonzalez. Gonzalez was killed in Iraq in August of 2008 while serving with the United States Army. He was 20 years old. Gonzalez was born and raised in Spotswood and was a 2006 graduate of Spotswood High School. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star before being laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in September of 2008.

Proceeds from the race will go towards supporting area veterans and service members in need as well as other organizations supporting veterans' causes. The cost for the race is $30 for runners, $20 for walkers and $15 for children. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. on race day. Registration can be done online. Online registration ends at midnight on September 7.

Thompson Park is located in Monroe along the Jamesburg border. There are park entrances at the intersection at Lakeview Drive and Forsgate Drive as well as along Perrineville Road.
