NEW BRUNSWICK<NJ - Furniture, handguns, ammunition, cars and a sewer camera will be purchased under a $5.7 million capital improvement budget that county freeholders approved recently.
The fiscal year 2018 budget includes $921,750 for furniture and fixtures for facilities countywide, including $300,000 for the county Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick.
Human Services, Youth Services and the Sheriff’s Department are among other agencies to get new chairs and other furniture.
The single largest item in the budget is $2.02 million for computer hardware and software. An additional $572,433 is allocated for software and hardware for the county clerk’s office.
Another $1 million is included for the purchase of equipment for highway and bridges work and maintenance.
Freeholders included $100,000 for the purchase of vehicles and another $100,000 will be spent for security cameras and upgrades for security systems. There is a separate allocation of $150,000 for camera equipment at the corrections center.
The budget includes $40,000 to buy handguns for the county Sheriff’s Department, and another $60,000 to purchase bullet-proof vests for sheriff’s officers.
For the prosecutor’s office, $20,000 was allocated for tactical vests, $6,150 will be used to purchase weapons and ammunition, and $1,800 will be spent on rifle optics.
Freeholders approved $5,000 for the county Board of Elections to purchase electronic polling books. The county will also spend $85,000 for warehouse parts at the Board of Elections, which is responsible for all the voting machines in the county.
The budget also includes $4,500 for the purchase of a sewer camera for the Division of Environmental Health.
