NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - A traffic accident on the ramp from US 1 south to Route 18 north Tuesday evening left local residents without power for hours on end, local officials confirmed.
On Tuesday evening, a car struck a utility pole on the ramp, knocking it over and causing an electrical transformer to light on fire, according to city spokesperson Jennifer Bradshaw.
While the vehicle’s occupants were able to safely evacuated and the fire was extinguished, the incident left local residents without power for varying periods of time Tuesday evening, Bradshaw said.
Residents in Rutgers Village and Raritan Gardens reported going without power.
The ramp remained closed and traffic was directed elsewhere, but the ramp reopened at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
