NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Can you hear that? It’s the sound of back-to-school commercials—and maybe a few screaming children.
Although summer is still roaring, it’s time to start preparing for school in September. And The Salvation Army wants to provide free backpacks to low-income students in New Brunswick and other Middlesex County municipalities.
Parents from the Hub City may register for a new, free backpack and other school supplies from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday this month, July, according to the charity group. Children entering kindergarten through eighth grades are eligible for the giveaway.
The back-to-school program requires photo identification from the child’s parent or legal guardian, proof of address (in the form of a lease, rental agreement or mortgage), proof of both parents’ income (four pay stubs, child support or government assistance documents) and the child’s birth certificate.
Backpacks are available only to kids in New Brunswick, Highland Park, Milltown, East Brunswick and North Brunswick.
For more information, contact The Salvation Army’s local office at 732-545-1477 or 287 Handy St., New Brunswick.
