SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Wesley United Methodist Church of South Plainfield welcomed James Lee as its new senior pastor on July 1.

“I am looking forward to see what God has in store for the community and how we can shine the light in South Plainfield and be a positive impact in the community,” Lee told TAPinto South Plainfield. “I am hoping to bring joy to Wesley and South Plainfield.”

Lee was born in New Jersey and spent three years living in his parents’ native Korea before moving back to the Garden State and settling in Madison when he was 14 years old. Following high school, Lee went on to attend Rutgers University and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with plans to go into medicine but events in his life took him down a different path.

“I had some spiritual experiences and life changing events in college and felt God was calling me to ministry,” said Lee.

In 2014, Lee earned a Masters in Divinity from the Drew Theological Seminary and, prior to coming to South Plainfield, served as a part time pastor at Conklin United Methodist Church in South River. Lee also has a passion for filmmaking and, in addition to owning his own wedding and cinematography business, worked as video producer for the United Methodist Greater New Jersey Conference for three years.

For Lee, a married father of two, sharing peoples’ stories through film and sharing God’s word through the gospel go hand in hand. “I enjoy filmmaking because I feel it is the best storytelling tool we have in 2018 and, for me in my vocation as a pastor, I am communicating the gospel and the good news, God and Jesus Christ and how it changes our lives,” he said. “I love how I can do that through my sermons as well as through filmmaking.”

On a personal level, Lee said he is looking forward to getting to know the residents of South Plainfield and sampling all the borough’s different restaurants. As pastor of Wesley, Lee he is eager to working with the community and its diverse population. “We welcome people of all shapes and sizes,” he said, adding, “Wherever you are in your faith journey, you have a place at Wesley Church.”

The community, he said, is invited to attend the church’s Rally Day, which will be held Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10:30 a.m. The event will feature an outdoor worship service as well as live music, a barbecue, and a butterfly release honoring those who have passed this year. Additionally, every Sunday from the third week in September through June, Wesley holds a 45-minute informal contemporary service at 9 a.m. and traditional services at 10:30 a.m.; from July through Labor Day, services are held Sundays at 9:30 a.m.
