NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Two educators at McKinley School are being hailed as heroes for reviving a student who stopped breathing.

Theresa Brooks, a teacher, and Katia Diaz, a paraprofessional, were recognized at the Dec. 17 Board of Education meeting for acting quickly during a classroom crisis.

Principal Janene M. Rodriguez said that one of them immediately started to perform CPR on the student while the other ran to get the nurse.

"And again, when we talk about teachers being heroes," Rodriguez said. "I think these two teachers really went beyond the heroics and really saved the student's life. Again, I am so honored and proud to be your principal and I thank you so much for what you did for our students that day."

Brooks and Diaz were called up on stage at the meeting, which is held in the New Brunswick High School auditorium. They were presented with bouquets of flowers and received a standing ovation.
