NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - A 73-year-old New Brunswick resident was killed Friday when the car she was driving was struck by a NJ Transit train in Middlesex Borough, authorities said.

Florence Obado was killed when at about 8:12 a.m., Raritan Valley Line train 5711, which departed Newark Penn State at 7:21 a.m. and was schedule to arrive in High Bridge at 8:52, struck Obado's car at the Cedar Avenue grade crossing, according to a statement released b NJ Transit.

The passenger, Susan Mazurek, 44, of Middlesex, was also killed, authorities confirmed.

No injuries were reported by the crew or the 30 or so customers on board.

Service on the Raritan Valley Line was suspended in both directions between Plainfield and Raritan as New Jersey Transit Police conducted an investigation. Service resumed about 2 p.m.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but NJ Transit officials said that safety equipment at that crossing was in working order.
