NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The Hub City’s own Javon Mercado is set to hit the mat tonight in the quarterfinals of the Region 5 wrestling tournament.
Mercado (25-7) is the sole Zebra left in the competition, according to NJ.com. Wrestling in the 220-pound weight class, he’s lined up to duke it out with Will Ortman (33-2) of Hopewell Valley on mat 4 at Hunterdon Central High School.
Mercado, a New Brunswick High School senior, was slotted as the seventh seed in regions after placing second for his class in the District 20 meeting.
He bested Franklin’s Abu Kossay earlier this week in the preliminary round on his way to tonight’s match.
Ortman, Mercado’s opponent tonight, was picked by Star-Ledger reporters to take second overall in the Region 5 tourney.
The match tonight is the second of four rounds.
The best of the best will go on to compete in states in Atlantic City.
The Zebras sent a handful of wrestlers to the regional contest. All of them but Mercado were taken down in the first round, according to reports.
