NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ- On this day in 1916, the Daily Home News led the front page with a story announcing the self-sustaining lunch plan for public schools showed a whopping profit of $13.51 for it first week. An estimated 400 "pupils secured their lunch" on the first day, the operation was "patronized" by 207 on the second day and dropped to 168 on the third day. Lunch orders jumped back up to 208 on day four of the new program.
