Prestigious National Honor for UMDNJ Nursing Leaders

Salmond, EdD, RN, CNE, FAAN, dean and professor of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Nursing, and Mary Kamienski, PhD, APRN-C, FAEN, FAAN, an associate professor and chairperson of the school’s Primary Care Department, have just received one of the highest distinctions in the nursing profession.  Both were inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on October 13.

The Academy consists of more than 1,800 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research. Criteria for selection include the extent to which nominees’ nursing careers influence health policies and the health and well-being of all.

Dr. Salmond’s exemplary achievements include establishing the first Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in the state of New Jersey at UMDNJ as well as contributions she has made to the global movement to implement and support evidence-based nursing practice across health care environments.  Dr. Kamienski led the development of a unique master’s degree program at UMDNJ that educates nurses to become family nurse practitioners specializing in advanced emergency care. One of only a few such programs in the nation, UMDNJ’s program was established with a competitive grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

“UMDNJ-School of Nursing will soon celebrate its 20th anniversary,” noted Denise V. Rodgers, MD, President (Interim) of UMDNJ.  “The school has built an extraordinary record of excellence in a very short time.  I am proud of the great contributions Drs. Salmond and Kamienski have made to the School of Nursing’s achievements, as well as their leadership in the nursing profession at large.  They are very deserving of this new honor.”

Earlier this year, Dean Salmond was also honored by being inducted as a Fellow of the National League for Nursing’s Academy of Nursing Education.

On October 16, the UMDNJ Board of Trustees officially congratulated Drs. Salmond and Kamienski.  Trustee Mary Ann Christopher, RN, MSN, FAAN, read the Board’s resolution citing the recognition Drs.
