Pancreatic cancer is now the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. It is predicted that by the year 2020, it will have moved to the second leading cause. It is called the "silent killer" because of how difficult it can be to diagnose until it is in its later stages. These factors, combined with the unknown cause of the disease, have led the medical community to call for greater efforts to find a cure.
The need for early detection is especially urgent for this type of cancer because it progresses quickly. A patient’s condition can progress from stage one to stage four in an average of one to three years. It is crucial that this disease is researched further so that we may understand its origins, how it spreads, and how new treatments can be developed. Sadly, this research is progressing slowly due to a lack of funding.
Pancreatic cancer research is underfunded by the federal government. New forms of treatment or testing always take significant amounts of time and money and do not guarantee success, which makes those who grant the funds, such as the federal government, reluctant to take risks. For example, the funding that the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey receives from the National Institutes of Health has been cut. The Rutgers Cancer Institute is currently seeking funds to further its research and clinical trials for pancreatic cancer. Middlesex County is rising to this fundraising challenge, and we are inviting you to join in our efforts.
Over the past nine years, Middlesex County has held an annual walk and 5K run to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. This event and a softball tournament held each summer have raised awareness and a total of $145,550 in donations. The events are sponsored by the Chronic Disease Coalition of Middlesex and Union counties and the Edison Municipal Alliance. Most of all, we raise the spirits of those living with this disease and their loved ones, and give them hope and support until a cure is found.
I invite you to participate in the ninth annual Pancreatic Cancer 5K Run/Walk to be held on June 10 at 9 a.m. at Roosevelt Park, Roosevelt Drive in Edison. If you would like to make a donation or join us, please visit www.cinjfoundation.donordrive.com
Whether you participate in honor of a deceased loved one, for someone who currently has pancreatic cancer, or just want to help in the search for a cure, we are grateful for your contributions.
Our annual softball tournament will be held Saturday, July 22 at Warren Park. All proceeds will benefit pancreatic cancer research at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The rain date will be July 29, and the suggested donation is $250 per team. For more information about the tournament, call 732-745-4484 or 732-745-4222, or email firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
Thank you for your support. May God bless you, and may God bless America!
