Rutgers New Brunswick is listed in Campus Pride's "Best of the Best" Top 30 LGBTQ-friendly schools and universities. Campus Pride is a leading nonprofit organization working to create a safer college environment for LGBTQ students. There were over 235 colleges and universities compatible with College Pride Index which assesses how LGBTQ-friendly a school’s policies, programs and practices are.

The factors that went into this rating were LGBTQ policy inclusion,  LGBTQ support & institutional commitment, LGBTQ academic life, LGBTQ student life, LGBTQ housing & resident life, LGBTQ campus safety, LGBTQ counseling  & health, and LGBTQ recruitment and retention efforts. Rutgers New Brunswick received an overall rating of five out of five. The only factor that did not receive a perfect score was LGBTQ policy inclusion which scored a 4.5/5.

The Rutgers University Center for Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities works with LGBTQ student organizations to provide services and programs to actively engage students and make a positive contribution to the community. There are several diverse LGBTQ groups currently working with the Center for Social Justice, including; Fusion (a student union of mixed race people), QSA (Queer Student Alliance), LLEGO, Douglass Q/mmunity, oStem (Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Speak OUT, Transmissions, and Q&A (Queer and Asian).
