NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — The Yard at College Avenue will heat up on Thursday nights in June.
The venue plans to host three free performances next month, from William Shakespeare to jazz and opera. Each showing will feature a cash bar. Patrons will need to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs.
The move aligns with a long-stated goal of the New Brunswick Development Corporation, or Devco, which manages the Rutgers University property. Officials have often said they envision The Yard as a public space for all city residents, not just college students.
“Summer Serenade is a unique opportunity to further introduce this exciting place to a wider audience,” Christopher Paladino, Devco’s president, told TAPinto New Brunswick via email. “New Brunswick has always offered outdoor music and cultural events during the summer, and The Yard is the perfect venue to expand that tradition.”
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is scheduled to perform a live rendition of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7 p.m. June 8.
The Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD program will bring a production of “La Boheme” to the big screen at 7 p.m. June 15. Attendees will also get a lecture and live performances from Rutgers’ opera program in the Mason Gross School of the Arts. The rain date is June 16.
Jazz comes to The Yard at 7 p.m. June 22. The New Brunswick Jazz Project plans to hold one of its jazz nights at the venue, which will feature The Tia Fuller Quartet. The rain date is June 23.
