EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -

In 2017, voters approved the New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act, authorizing $125 million in state bonds to be used to improve library facilities, including new construction and renovation. The state will be providing up to 50% matching funds for approved projects.

The East Brunswick Public Library opened the doors to its current location in 1976, serving a population of roughly 35,000. Today, that same location serves a community of over 48,000 people. As East Brunswick's population has increased, the library has worked to balance the demand for both world-class library services as well as community space that all residents can access. Over the past few years, the library has conducted several customer surveys to discover how it can better serve library users.

This feedback has influenced the renovation and expansion plan. The updated library will include a new children's library, a dedicated space for 'tweens, an enhanced teen space, several new meeting and multipurpose rooms, an expanded passport services area, additional seating, an enclosed quiet reading room, and an outdoor terrace. The proposed expansion was designed by NK Architects and Soyka Smith Design Studios.

In March, the East Brunswick Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously to apply for the New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act, and at its May 18 meeting, the East Brunswick Township Council also voted unanimously to support the project. On May 29, the library’s grant application was submitted. Applications will be evaluated by the State Library Review Committee, with approved applicants expected to be notified in October.
