NEW BRUNSWICK - Two Atlantic County men were arrested for the shooting of two New York City men during a drug deal gone bad in New Brunswick early Tuesday, police said.
The suspects, Darnell Lewis, 19 and Christopher Gist, 18, both of Egg Harbor, were arrested Tuesday in Egg Harbor and each was charged with attempted murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and weapons offenses, New Brunswick Capt. J.T. Miller said in a statement.
About 4 a.m. Tuesday, the two victims of the shooting, identified as Jaylen Martinez, 19, and Miguel Puello, 21, both of New York City, were driven to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in the city by a third person to get treatment for gunshot wounds, Miller said.
He said Martinez was shot in the chest and Puello was wounded in the hip. Wounds are not life-threatening.
City police detectives determined the shooting was the result of a failed drug deal on the 1100 block of Somerset Street earlier that morning, the captain said.
No information was released as to why the reported drug transaction occurred in New Brunswick
The detectives identified Lewis and Gist as the suspects, and New Brunswick police notified authorities in Atlantic County and Egg Harbor, Miller said.
He said Lewis and Gist were arrested hours later at two separate locations in Egg Harbor, each without incident.
