NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — After a water main break early this morning shut down part of Somerset Street, the city expects the stretch of road to soon reopen.
The break occurred near Somerset’s intersection with Oxford Street, according to the city. At around 7:15 a.m., workers closed Somerset between Oxford and Cogswell Place, New Brunswick spokesperson Jennifer Bradshaw said.
“I expect it to be reopened in no more than one hour’s time,” she said at 12:40 p.m. today, June 22.
By that time, workers had already clamped and repaired the water main, she said. They were moving to repair the road.
New Brunswick Water Utility customers in the neighborhood might have experienced lower pressure than usual, Bradshaw said. But she noted that the city didn’t cut off water service to the area.
The city hasn’t pinpointed a precise cause, she said.
“The biggest factor is likely age of the pipe,” she said.
