NEW BRUNSWICK - Residents in the area of Wilcox and Halstead roads may see some temporary discoloration of the water coming from the taps today due to a water main replacement project.
The work is being done in the Rutgers Village neighborhood in the southeast end of the city.
City officials said the water remains safe to use, but people should avoid running hot water and refrain from doing laundry while the darker color remains.
The discoloration results from dislodging iron deposits in water mains.
These deposits could build up in water heaters and could stain laundry, officials warn.
