HIGHLAND PARK, NJ - A GoFundMe page has been set up for Susie Welkovits, a three-term member of the council who passed away Friday morning.

She fell ill in early March and was hospitalized in New Jersey. During her time in the hospital, her illness was compounded by the fact that she acquired COVID-19 during her stay.  After months of fighting, she died as a result of an emergency procedure on the morning, according to the GoFundMe page.

She is survived by her husband and 11-year-old twins.

Mrs. Welkovits was remembered as a fierce advocate for public schools and pedestrian and bicycle access.

Mayor Gayle Brill Mittler, in a Facebook post, said, "Susie's incredible commitment to making Highland Park a better place should never be forgotten."

Ms. Welkovits was appointed to the council in 2011 to fill a vacancy. She was reelected three times in 2012, 2015 and 2018, according to a published report by the Highland Park Planet.

As a result of her prolonged hospital stay and passing, her family is facing financial hardship, according to the GoFundMe page.

Contributions will be used for Susie's medical expenses, payments on their house, her children's extracurricular activities and living expenses for her husband and children and their pets.

Contributions that exceed that will be put into accounts for the children's future needs and education.

More than $6,000 has been raised. The goal is $25,000.
