Ahrre Maros knows a few things about coffee. The owner of Ahrre’s Coffee Roastery in Westfield and Summit, who roasts his beans in Plainfield, has been in the coffee shop business in Union County for 30 years as of this summer.
Maros shared his secrets for making a great batch of cold brew coffee at home.
“The important thing about cold brew is that when you brew the coffee at room temperature you don’t get as much of the tars and acids in the coffee as you would at higher temperatures,” Maros explained. “So the cold brew is gentler on the stomach and the taste buds.”
To brew a small batch, he recommends combining ¼ lb. of ground coffee with a little more than a quart of water. Let it sit for at least 18 hours, then strain. To make a large batch, combine 1 lb. of ground coffee with a little more than a gallon.
For the very best cold brew at home, he offered these tips:
You don’t need fancy equipment.
Cold brew sets look nice on your counter, but all you really need to get started is a jar or pitcher and a tea strainer.
“It starts to look a little MacGyver-esque,” he joked.
A French press will work well, too.
Don’t grind too fine.
The grind used for drip coffee is just perfect for cold brew.
You can use any kind of beans … except flavored
Maros uses a blend of Colombian light roast and Colombian supremo (darker roast) at his shops.
Never make cold brew coffee with flavored beans, he warns, because the added flavorings, which are meant to be boiled off, can make you sick if the coffee is not heated.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Maros signing his first lease, Ahrre’s Coffee Roastery in Westfield will offer free coffee — freshly brewed hot or cold brew — all day on July 23, 24 and 25, 2019.
