NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The national alert over school safety came home to New Brunswick, where a middle school teen has been charged with creating a false alarm.

Police said the 14-year-old New Brunswick Middle School student told others he had a gun in his backpack on Friday at school. He later told city detectives that he was just joking and police found no evidence of the weapon at the middle school or at his home.

Teachers learned of the potential threat at the end of the school day on Friday and called in city police.

New Brunswick cops say they take these threats very seriously. "Even if the students perceive them as jokes, the consequences can be serious," police said in a statement.
