NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - A 21-year-old city man died early this morning after being shot several times.

Sharif Austin died from multiple gunshot wounds at about 12:20 a.m., according to a press release issued by Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet and
Director Anthony A. Caputo of the New Brunswick Police Department.

Police were alerted to a shooting at about 11:55 p.m. Monday.

According to authorities, police arrived to find Austin with multiple gunshots wounds on the corner of Lee Avenue and Handy Street.

He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

A formal finding regarding the cause of death is pending review by the Middlesex County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Detective Erica DiMarcello of the New Brunswick Police Department and Detective Mark Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.
