FRANKLIN, NJ (Somerset County) - A 32-year-old New Brunswick man has been arrested and charged with possession of heroin, police said.

According to a press release from Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson and Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor, Marcelino Ortiz of Harvey Street had three outstanding warrants for his arrest when he was stopped on Hamilton Street in Franklin on Aug. 29.

Ortiz was placed under arrest and a subsequent search revealed 10 glassine folds of suspected heroin.

According to the press release, Ortiz was charged with third degree possession of heroin. He was processed and issued a summons and turned over to Middlesex County Jail for the outstanding arrest warrants.    

Police said the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Organized Crime and Narcotics Task Force and the Franklin Police Department Crime Suppression Unit were conducting a “quality of life” detail in the area of Hamilton Street on Aug. 29.  At about 8:15 p.m., detectives said they observed Ortiz on a bicycle in a parking lot on Hamilton Street.

Police said they saw Ortiz meeting with several individuals. He was subsequently approached by a Task Force detective.
